As the temperature rises some of us can’t resist the urge to get out and soak up the sun, but for some of us the heat means stay in and stay cool. Whichever category you fall into, there’s a few things you can do to keep moving and stay active all summer long!
If you’re outside, sunscreen is an absolute must – regardless of the temperature. Stay covered with loose, light clothing and keep a wide-brimmed hat nearby to keep the sun at bay. Look for “broad spectrum” sunscreens that protect against both UVB and UVA rays. A good SPF of 30 or more, reapplied every 90 minutes is essential to help minimize sunburn and premature aging.
Staying hydrated can really make you feel better, and it’s absolutely necessary if your outside and the temperature is creeping up. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, sit someplace cool and sip away – avoiding alcohol, sugary or caffeinated beverages which can be dehydrating.
Most people naturally feel less hungry when it’s hot, but if that’s not you, try to resist the urge to eat a heavy meal. Light, cool dishes – like a pasta salad tossed with fresh vegetables – will keep you satisfied without weighing you down.
Join the gym
If the heat gets you down, try joining a local gym so you can stay active inside and stay cool. It’s surprising how good it feels to sweat it out at the gym!
